1Let winter property care tips to keep your property snug, safe and winter-ready.

As winter rolls in, it's time for both tenants and landlords to team up against the chill! We’ve put together this handy guide and sent to all 1Let tenants—your ultimate cheat sheet to keep your home snug, safe, and winter-ready.

Protecting Against Burst Pipes

Frozen pipes can lead to costly damage. To prevent this:

Keep Heating On: Maintain a minimum temperature of 5°C if you’re away for more than 24 hours (from 1 December to 30 March).

Long Absences: For extended periods, consider shutting off the water supply and draining the water system. Unsure how? Contact a plumber for assistance.

Notify Your 1Let: Let us know if you plan to be away for more than 14 days.

Tip: Remember to arrange contents insurance to protect your belongings, as landlord insurance won’t cover personal items.

Preventing Condensation and Mould

Condensation can lead to mould growth, but a few simple actions can help:

Maintain Consistent Heating: Keep rooms above 18°C and ensure some heating stays on even when you’re out.

Control Moisture: Minimise steam from cooking, bathing, or drying clothes by keeping doors closed and using extractor fans or opening windows.

Ensure Ventilation: Slightly open windows or use trickle vents, and avoid blocking air vents.

Avoid Trapped Air: Keep furniture slightly away from external walls and open wardrobe doors occasionally.

Dry Responsibly: Dry clothes outside or in a well-ventilated space with doors closed.

If mould appears, clean it with a fungicidal mould remover or a natural solution like white vinegar.
