One of the biggest challenges facing the owners of property within Edinburgh is the maintenance of the buildings themselves. With the rise in the number of tenanted homes, the city’s historic tenement buildings have not always been maintained to a high level. Often, homeowners aren’t sure who’s responsibility it is to maintain, and pay for, the upkeep of the communal areas. Tenants aren’t liable for the cost of repairs so unless every homeowner agrees to pay their share buildings will naturally start to fall into a state of dilapidation.
Fortunately, the City of Edinburgh Council has come up with a good solution. A ‘Virtual Tenement’ app is being created which will allow property owners to find each other and arrange necessary repairs. If all goes to plan, this could finally see Edinburgh’s tenement properties getting the on-going love and attention they deserve!
Details of the app, which is still being developed, can be found here: Virtual Tenement.
